- Enhanced F-35 Canopy Facility Bolsters Production Capacity
-
The 531st Commodities Maintenance Squadron recently opened a new 24,000 square foot F-35 canopy shop at Hill Air Force Base, tripling their previous workspace and accommodating future needs. This shop specializes in meticulously refurbishing canopies for various F-35 models used by the Air Force, Navy, and Marines.
Previously located in building 271, this exclusive F-35 maintenance and overhaul canopy shop has already produced 28 canopies in the first eight months of the fiscal year. With the new shop now fully operational, they anticipate completing an additional 23 canopies this summer. Melinda Hunt, the F-35 canopy production supervisor, foresees further growth and aims to hire more personnel later in the year to meet increasing customer demands.
Canopies with damage or imperfections are sent to the shop and undergo a detailed five-gate process, taking 31 days to complete. This process involves teardown, build up, testing, final finishing, and packaging for shipment. The technicians receive hands-on training from Lockheed Martin Corporation (the F-35's manufacturer) and their expertise is reflected in their exceptional workmanship. The shop utilizes a mapper to compensate for optical distortions caused by the canopy's thickness, curves, and material, ensuring accurate views for the weapon systems.
The success of delivering flawless products relies on the dedicated individuals working in the shop. Hunt commends their high expectations, teamwork, and pride in their craft. She emphasizes the team's commitment to supporting the warfighter and their ability to produce high-quality end items, stating that it is rewarding to witness their exceptional work and dedication.
