- Tyndall Air Force Base Rebuilds, Ready for F-35 in 2023
-
In 2018, Tyndall Air Force Base in Florida was struck by Hurricane Michael. After the storm, Tyndall began to rebuild the base.
As a critical asset for the nation’s defense strategy due to some of the best training airspace anywhere in the Department of Defense, it made sense to bring the F-35 to Tyndall. The base is preparing to take on a new mission consistent with the long-range goals of the U.S. Air Force once the build is finished.
Groundbreaking at Tyndall for future facilities, including F-3A5 hangars and flightline, took place on September 13. The secretary of the Air Force directed the construction to house up to three squadrons of F-35As. The fifth-generation aircraft are slated to arrive at Tyndall in September 2023.The facilities being built will all be resistant to future hurricanes and flooding. Unlike the facilities pre-Hurricane Michael, these new ones will be here to stay despite tropical storms.
