- 644th Combat Communications Squadron Develops Solution to F-35 Data Sharing Challenge
-
The F-35 is designed to access, synthesize and leverage information to improve combat decision-making across domains, countries and platforms. It unites operations by allowing a clear avenue to critical information that keeps allies connected and significantly ahead of adversaries.
In spring 2022, a group of expeditionary communications technicians from the 644th Combat Communications Squadron at Andersen Air Force Base, Guam, convened for one month at Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska, to figure out how to get the F-35 to transfer data on remote or contested Pacific islands, or areas where there is not an existence of data servers.
The 644th Combat Communications Squadron heavily discussed the requirements and limiting factors to achieve this goal. They reached out to several units, including the Defense Information Systems Agency, the 26th Network Operations Squadron (NOS), the 83rd NOS, the 690th NOS, the 561st NOS, and Lockheed Martin contractors to explain to them how the F-35 information systems work, and the data flows and timelines required for mission success. The tenacity and innovation of the squadron now enables an F-35 to drop anywhere around the globe and gain access to information when it counts.
