- Italian FACO Welcomes First European F-35 for Maintenance
-
Availability is a key component of the F-35 enterprise. The F-35 Joint Program Office’s long-term goal is an environment of comprehensive sustainment excellence that includes initiatives to keep parts on wing longer, maintaining an appropriate spares posture, and enhancing repair capability and velocity.
There are currently three Final Assembly and Checkout (FACO) facilities operating in the world that produce F-35s: Fort Worth, Texas; Cameri, Italy; and Nagoya, Japan. In a first for its facility, Italy’s F-35 FACO line has been qualified to start offering maintenance to European jets and this July 2022 received its first customer: a Norwegian F-35.
The Cameri, Italy facility reached full operational capability in June 2022. Italy hopes new European F-35 customers will have their jets assembled at the Cameri facility. Presently, 22 Italian fighters have rolled off the line, including 17 F-35As and 5 F-35Bs. Italy F-35 maintenance hub opens for international customers with Norwegian jet (defensenews.com)
