- Process Overhauls Improve F135 Heavy Maintenance, Availability at Tinker Air Force Base
-
The F-35 must remain operative, and parts need to be available when needed. The U.S. Air Force reduced the repair and overhaul time for F-35 engines by more than half: an average 244 days to 106 from the beginning of 2021 to today. The facility behind this updated metric is the air logistics complex at Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma, the largest of three depots in Air Force Materiel Command. The base maintains a variety of aircraft and engines for the air force, including the F135.
Improving the capacity of depots that perform the heaviest maintenance on F135 engines is one of the top ways the military is trying to tackle the shortage challenges.
The reduction of flow days was a deliberate, meticulous application of improvements including a hiring wave, process overhauls, and new tools and equipment. Here’s how Tinker Air Force Base cut heavy maintenance time for F-35 engines in half (defensenews.com)
