  • Air Force repurposes condemned F-35 aircraft for training aids
  • Even a fifth-generation aircraft with the most advanced of capabilities may experience a mishap incident and cannot be returned to the flight line. When these type of events happen, the F-35 Joint Program Office has a strategy in place to use the damaged aircraft to better the Warfighter maintenance knowledge of the F-35. Refining maintenance knowledge through training also can lower costs. Airmen in the 372nd Training Squadron at Hill Air Force Base, Utah, are currently transforming a damaged F-35A into sectional training aids for F-35 maintainers. The aircraft was involved in a landing mishap at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, in 2020. Readiness is maintained when flyable F-35As are kept in service and maintenance crews can be trained on unflyable aircraft. Read more about this project.
