Activities > Edwards
Air Force Base, California
Edwards Air Force Base began as a stark
and remote bombing range in 1933 and went on to become a major
bomber training base in World War II. The Air Force Flight
Test Center originated during the darkest days of the war,
and has since achieved more major milestones in flight than
anywhere else in the world.
For the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter program,
Edwards AFB provides a large amount of flight test expertise.
Most recently, JSF events at Edwards AFB have been leading
up to the first flight of the F-35A, which will eventually
be flown at Edwards AFB. Recent JSF activities at Edwards
AFB have included the following:
- Awarded $20M MILCON contract to W.E. O’Neil Company
for Phase I Developmental Testing (DT) at Edwards AFB to
support JSF System Development and Demonstration (SDD) program.
Renovation project includes modern infrastructure, offices,
hangar and work areas plus construction of a new munitions
maintenance facility and warehouse.
- Achieved 100% MILCON Design for JSF ITF-EDW (Bldg 1820)
and new Alternate Mission Equipment (AME) facility. Construction
started with 8 Nov 04 Ground Breaking Ceremony at AFFTC,
Edwards AFB, CA.
- Negotiated and arranged permanent transfer of JSF X-35B
Concept Demonstration Aircraft (CDA) from JSF ITF, Edwards
AFB, CA to the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum,
Washington, D.C.
- Worked closely with JSF propulsion contractors Pratt
& Whitney, and General Electric to define facilities
requirements for RDT&E construction/bed down of PW-135
and GE-136 engines at Edwards AFB.
- Major contributor participating in successful completion
of JSF Air Vehicle and Propulsion system Preliminary Design
Reviews (PDRs).
- Successfully received and translated Lockheed-Martin
computer aided design (CAD) files for JSF Simulator Cockpits.
Enabled building of cockpits for handling qualities mission
rehearsal in support of JSF SDD.
- Provided technical input into the F-35 Weapons Bay Design
by influencing the integral weapons loading hoist design.
- Provided technical design input on the JSF F135 engine
removal and installation trailer.
- Developed analysis tools with all IPTs that will benefit
the Verification & Validation process during F-35 flight
test.
- Successful at continuing to develop joint USAF/USN processes
supporting flight test, such as, test planning, flight clearance,
and safety planning.
